Nike to release Lance Armstrong clothing collection

Beaverton, Ore.-based Nike, Inc, the world's largest maker of athletic shoes and clothing, is teaming up with six time Tour de France champion Lance Armstrong in producing a new clothing collection.

Called The 10/2 Lance Armstrong collection, Nike will offer a variety of high performance technical cycling wear and lifestyle products. And, just like the yellow Nike/Armstrong “Livestrong” wristbands, proceeds from the sales will go to the Lance Armstrong Foundation.

Why 10/2 as a name? For Lance Armstrong, October 2 (10/2) was a life-altering day.

“October 2, 1996, The day it all changed. The day I started never to take anything for granted,” Armstrong said in a Nike news release. “It was the day I was diagnosed with cancer.”

Nike said the new clothing collection is inspired by Armstrong’s celebration of life.

The collection

Performance jerseys: Long sleeve, short sleeve and sleeveless cycling jerseys featuring Nike’s Dri-FIT moisture resistant material. The jerseys also have mesh inserts at the arms and back of neck and a zipper to allow for ventilation.

Performance shorts: Bibbed cycling shorts made of synthetic chamois and synthetic 190-gram nylon spandex.

Windfront vest: 100% microfiber polyester vest that is water-resistant and windproof. It features an extra high collar to afford greater wind protection and has an open-mesh back for ventilation.

Beware unplanned SP2 downloads on April 12

On Tuesday, April 12, Microsoft will turn off the blocking feature that has made it possible for some enterprises to block Windows XP Service Pack 2 downloads by employees who use Automatic Update. That means in companies that used the blocking tool, SP2 will be downloaded automatically to desktop computers that use Windows' Automatic Update feature.

In its April 4 report on business adoption of Windows XP SP2, AssetMetrix warned that a surge of SP2 downloads on April 12 could stress IT help desks and cause "productivity brownouts" among employees. But a Microsoft spokesman downplayed that scenario, saying fewer than 1% of Microsoft's enterprise customers ever used the blocking tool anyway. Small businesses and consumers will be unaffected by the change, he says, because the blocking tool was not available to them.

AssetMetrix advises companies that did use the blocking tool, yet now want employees to upgrade to SP2, to do so gradually before April 12 in order to avoid a big-bang support problem. It's worth noting that April 12, as the second Tuesday of the month, is the same day that Microsoft is scheduled to release its monthly software patches, if any are forthcoming.

The Murakami Method

By ARTHUR LUBOW

At the Mori Arts Center, which is perched atop a skyscraper in the glittering Roppongi Hills development in Tokyo, I recently visited a museum show, ''Universal Symbol of the Brand,'' that displayed (to quote its catalog) ''the fascinating development of the history and endeavors of Louis Vuitton, the brand that is not only incredibly popular in Japan but also beloved throughout the world.'' A sequence of galleries exhibiting luggage and handbags proceeded to a large advertising photograph of the actress Uma Thurman and smaller shots of runway models, all wearing Vuitton fashions. What drew me to the show, however, were two bags in the variation of the Vuitton pattern that the Japanese contemporary artist Takashi Murakami developed with the company in 2003. The brightly colored Murakami line has been phenomenally successful, with sales reported to be in the vicinity of $300 million. Murakami's handbags were presented along with two small paneled screens painted in the same patterns that appear on the bags ...

Armstrong fades late in Belgium's 159-miler

Lance Armstrong finished 28th Sunday in the Ronde of Flanders, which was won by Belgium's Tom Boonen for the biggest victory of his career.

Armstrong was among the leaders most of the way but dropped back with 15 miles left in one of the five biggest one-day races. The Texan is tuning up for the Tour de France in July, when he will attempt to win the title for the seventh straight year.

Boonen split from a breakaway group in the final stages and won the 159-mile race in Meerbeke, Belgium, in 6 hours, 22 minutes, 49 seconds. He was 33 seconds ahead of Germany's Andreas Klier.

The Ronde of Flanders is one of cycling's toughest challenges -- with 17 hills and stretches of cobblestones in the second part of the race. It is rare for multistage racers like Armstrong to figure prominently in such conditions, yet he led the chasing pack up hills, as intent as during climbs in the Alps and Pyrenees.
